My approach to teaching is simple. Make it fun! During lessons, we work hard and enthusiastically, with the main emphasis being learning in a fun and relaxed way, with mutual respect between student and teacher. I use a variety of teaching methods, depending on the level of each particular student. Some singing is encouraged to (initially!) break down barriers between student and teacher and also to promote general musicianship and a good ear. Technique such as scales, exercises and studies are important when learning any instrument, so these are also included in lessons. And then of course the pieces themselves..... Classical, or more folk and jazz based pieces should the student wish for that. My students are currently aged between 6-60ish years old and I would encourage anyone aged 6-100 to have a go if they are interested. I have mixed feelings about teaching under 6's, and will only do so if they are very developed for their age. I teach at my home in Southbourne.(Charminster from July 2013) I always invite parents to sit in on the first lesson (and subsequent should they wish), to go home and discuss with their child, then let me know whether they are interested or not. If a child is not happy and comfortable with me, there is no point in having lessons!

As a school boy in the Bournemouth area I was very much involved in the local music scene, leading the Bournemouth Youth Orchestra, the Dorset Youth Orchestras and the orchestra of "Gli Amici Della Musica" in my last year. Then followed 4 years at Trinity College of Music in London, achieving a Bmus(TCM) degree with the help of my fantastic teacher, Nona Liddell. After that I spent 4 years touring the world as a stage Violinist with the Canadian based Violin show "Barrage" (Check out www.Barrage.ca) Countries visited with the show include the USA (over 80 cities), Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, New Zealand, Monaco, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Having had enough of touring after four years, I decided to move to New Zealand for 6 months, where I played with the "Auckland Chamber Orchestra" and several string quartets. After 9 years away, I returned to Dorset, where I have lived again since spring 2005. I now enjoy a varied freelancer's lifestyle, regularly playing with String Quartets, Orchestras, playing for recording sessions, as well as private Violin teaching. I also coach the Violin section of the Bournemouth University Orchestra. I have done education work in schools as far afield as mainland USA, Alaska, Taiwan and Canada with my former job as Violinist in the Canadian based Violin show "Barrage".

My rates are £20/30 mins, £30/45mins and £40/hour.
